A Book of Zen Moments Just Grab The Dust Rag (Confessions of a Deluded Zen Student Who Never Learned A Thing) is a personal journey through almost forty years of Zen practice in New York with a Japanese Zen Master. Filled with often humorous personal encounters with not only Zen Masters, but other students, friends and family, we watch a deluded Zen student’s struggle for awareness and compassion. As she engages this simple, but rigorous Zen practice, we see her wonder, folly confusion, delusions, victories and defeats. We also watch her unnerving ability to keep going and determination to endure. Simple and direct, the book is filled with both the longing for authentic living and the potholes we all fall into and hopefully climb out of again. The treasures and gifts of this beautiful practice are included, along with the inevitable dangers that must be worked through.

The spiritual search and practice is so important and Zen does have much to offer, but this book left me feeling sad. It felt like it had been written 20 years ago... so to have it written and published now, after all the various sexual scandals and extreme abuses of power that have racked and wrecked the Zen world in America, seems quite frankly bizarre. I do not recommend this book, but if you must read it, as a companion, I highly recommend Mark Oppenheimer's book, the Zen Predator of the Upper East Side - which you can now read an abridged version on-line for free through the Atlantic web-site. The full e-book you can buy here on amazon. A few things. Brenda mentions the names of some of her Zen teachers, but her main teacher and his organization are never identified in the book. First, this is so weird in the internet age where three minutes of googling will show you this teacher was Edo Shimano and the organization the Zen Studies Society, so it is hardly a secret. Why keep his name secret? Who is she protecting and why? Find out for yourself. What the Zen world needs more than anything else now is honesty, transparency and sane accountability. And what it needs now is common sense, not the use of Zen phrases and sometimes babble to justify misbehavior and harm. Let's stop blaming the victims. And the women from the centers where too many of these so-called "masters" used their female followers as Zen toys need not only to speak out loudly, but to sue them and put them out of business - so they will stop harming people in the name of dharma. I recommend the website sweepingzen.com if you want to read more about this issue. I don't want to go on too much here. You get my point. When last note. I had a unique moment of spiritual nausea when I read the quote that Brenda used in her book from Joshu Sasaki - "The whole world is a hospital, but the zendo is the intensive care unit. Take care." Sasaki was a notorious sexual predator - this is not rumor or slander, but fact. If the whole world is a hospital, then Sasaki's Zen scene was a toxic dysfunctional psych ward..... it is time to wake up from Zen enchantment and be spiritual adults..... this book will not help you wake up...

Just Grab The Dust Rag Confessions of a Deluded Zen student who never learned a thing Brenda Eshin Shoshanna 9781499309034 Books Reviews

Loved reading people's experiences sitting Zen, and really enjoyed Ms Shoshanna's book.
Not preaching, not teaching just letting us in to the power of the practice. I am inspired to practice more more and more. Even though my style is different I could relate so well. Thank you!
A lot of us chased Eastern gurus. Uh oh! A lot of the gurus were caught doing no no's! The spiritual centers we put a lot of time and money and effort into fell apart. Somehow, Eshin tells her version of this story without self pity, recrimination or judgement. Refreshing!
Wow! I thoroughly enjoyed reading Brenda Shoshanna's account of experiences as a Zen practitioner. Anyone who undertakes a project with such dedication and sincerity will encounter similar positive and negative experiences on the path of growth and skill development. I recommend this book to just about everyone!
In her very humble way, Dr. Shoshana continues her path of teaching the mind and reaching the heart. It's not a book you read once. It's a book you come back to again and again.

I'm sure Brenda does not read her reviews. So let me just say, this (and all of her books) are worth getting.

What, you haven't read Zen and the Art of Falling in Love?

You should...
